Winter HVAC Tips for Raleigh / Durham
In case you haven’t checked your thermostat recently, it’s getting cold outside in and around the Raleigh area. Are you prepared for the winter chill? One of the most common mistakes homeowners make is not conducting maintenance on their HVAC and/or furnace system prior to winter. And when Jack Frost arrives, the system may not function properly.
This can be problematic for both your quality of life and pocketbook. Routine professional maintenance is almost always less expensive than preventable repair costs. Here are several HVAC tips leading into the winter months that could save you time and money:
Check your Thermostat
Sometimes the simplest possible solution is best. Have you checked your thermostat? Test out the various heating settings. Is the thermostat triggering at the right time? If you’re using a programmable thermostat, is the scheduling mechanism working? It’s always possible that a thermostat goes bad during the fall lull, and only proves to be problematic when it’s no longer a comfy 72 degrees inside. If you don’t check it, you won’t know anything is wrong.
A well-insulated home can retain heat during the winter. Poor insulation, be it on ground level or in the attic, can lead to heat escaping and therefore putting more strain on your heating systems. Beyond the obvious spots, don’t forget that the cold can creep in where you least expect it! That includes crawl spaces, and even your garage door area. Insulate well.
Clean Air Vents and Replace Filters
Symptoms of a poor system may include dirty vents or excessive buildup in your filters. Blockages can lead to air quality issues and inefficient heating. With air vents specifically, substantial proximal dirt by indicate a duct leak which is allowing dust to enter your air stream. When these issues come into question, consult with a professional.
